Casita is on a mission to help people discover Mexico's incredible architecture and design. You can support us by booking your next trip directly through our website - you'll get a great rate and help us grow!

Located meters from a secluded stretch of Pacific coastline, this property has established itself as one of the most sought-after residences in Mexico. This compact, eco-friendly home (there's no AC or internet) is the perfect place to get away from it all, whether for a couple’s retreat or a solo trip to relax and enjoy a hammock swing.

The house was designed by up-and-coming Mexican architect Aranza de Ariño, inspired by Henry David Thoreau’s novella Walden. Conceived as a treatise on solitude, contemplation, and closeness to nature, combining a laid-back aesthetic with a chic brutalist twist.

A minimalist design and raw materials encourage introspection and reflection, inviting a moment for perfect tranquility. While its sturdy concrete walls are a far cry from Thoreau's humble forest abode, its unadorned nature sits in perfect harmony with the surrounding jungle and ocean breeze.

The one-bedroom mezzanine house features a pool, a kitchenette, a pizza oven, and a breakfast bar that extends through French windows onto the patio. Surrounded by lush vegetation and the soft sound of the breaking waves, it will take you back to basics without sacrificing the finer things.

This pretty home is located in the exclusive beachfront neighborhood of Punta Pajaros, 30 minutes from Puerto Escondido Airport (PXM) and 45 minutes from downtown Puerto Escondido. The neighborhood—if you could call it that, considering its simplicity and isolation—features three small restaurants (that close early), a mezcal bar, and a handful of art galleries.

Punta Pajaro’s crown jewel is Bosco Sodi’s famed Casa Wabi, an art studio and exhibition space built by Japanese architect Tadao Ando. Rent a car or take a taxi to get here; don’t plan to go anywhere. This is a spot to relax and forget the world.
