Desert Casita in Todos Santos

The desert here doesn't ease you in. It opens all at once — cardones rising against a sky that seems larger than it should be, the Pacific a thin shimmer at the edge of the horizon, the Sierra to the east catching the first light before anything else does. The house sits in the middle of all of it, elevated just enough above the ground that the views feel claimed rather than borrowed.

One hundred square meters of interior, wrapped on every side by a hundred and fifty more of terrace. The palette inside borrows from what's outside: the ochres and dusty pinks of the desert floor, the pale greys of dried torote bark. High ceilings pull in the sky; the main bedroom faces east by intention, so the Todos Santos sunrise enters before you're fully awake, and the stars are visible from bed long after the lights go out.

The kitchen is fully equipped, the living and dining areas are generous, and the bathrooms are complete. But the house is at its best at its edges — the terraces that track the sun through the day, the outdoor dining table where dinner stretches past the last light. Beach towels, umbrellas, and chairs are on hand for the walk to the water, twenty minutes on foot through the cactus and the quiet, or ten by car to La Pastora and its surf break.

Javi lives in a small house on the property. Three dogs come with the land. None of them are intrusive. All of them are good.
