Casita in Santa Teresa

Mornings open cool and clear over the pine ridges around San Cristóbal, clouds tend to gather by afternoon, and by evening the air has enough of an edge that a fire feels less like a luxury than a ritual. This house sits on the quiet outskirts of town, turned toward the mountains, far enough from the center to hear the valley and close enough to be back among the cobblestones and markets in a short drive.

It was built the way houses in Chiapas have long been built. Adobe, wood, and brick, finished with a roof of traditional clay tile. The craftsmanship is honest and unfussy, and the comfort comes from the materials themselves. Most days will find their way to the porch, where hammocks and seating face the ridgeline and there's little reason to do anything but watch the weather cross the hills.

Inside, a working fireplace anchors the living space. Wood is supplied during the winter months, and a space heater is on hand for colder nights. Two bedrooms each hold a queen bed, and a separate studio doubles as a dedicated workspace with full-speed WiFi, useful for anyone staying long enough to work between excursions. An additional twin bed can be set up with advance notice. The kitchen covers the essentials: a range oven, fridge, full set of cookware, toaster, and both a drip coffee maker and an Italian moka pot. There's no microwave and no television. For most guests that's the point.

It's a comfortable base for families and for anyone using the highlands as a starting point to explore Chiapas. Parking for two cars is right in front of the house, shared with the neighboring property.
