Villa in Sian Kaan

South of Tulum, past the last of the hotels, the road narrows and the jungle closes in on both sides. This is the edge of Sian Ka'an, a UNESCO-protected biosphere of mangrove, lagoon and reef, and the villa sits inside it on a thin strip of land between two very different kinds of water. On one side, the Caribbean. On the other, a lagoon threaded with canals the Maya cut through the wetlands centuries ago.

Diego de Yturbe designed the house to open to both. Mornings arrive off the sea, bright and loud with surf, and by late afternoon the lagoon side takes over, flat and still, the light turning gold over the mangroves. All four bedrooms face the ocean. There's a private pool, and a full-service team runs the house, so meals, housekeeping and the small logistics of each day happen quietly in the background.

The reserve is the reason to come. Days here tend to organize themselves around the water: a swim off the beach before breakfast, an afternoon on the lagoon, a slow float down the old canals, where the current does the work and the mangroves close in overhead. The birds are loudest just after dawn. Evenings are dark in the way few places near Tulum still are.

Tulum's restaurants and beach clubs are close enough for a night out and far enough that none of it reaches the house. The road into the reserve is unpaved and slow, and the drive takes patience. It's also a large part of why the quiet holds.
