Designer Home in Santa Teresa

Halfway up a hillside in the heart of Santa Teresa, just steps from the mar-A-mar enclave, a top-floor home opens itself entirely to the Pacific. There is no separation here between inside and out — a wide balcony threads through every room, and the ocean simply continues into the architecture, framed but never contained.

Mornings arrive as light first, sound second: the distant pull of the surf break below, monkeys moving through the canopy before the heat sets in. The design is the work of an award-winning Costa Rican architect, and it shows in the restraint — open sightlines, natural materials, a kitchen that flows into a living room that flows onto the terrace, all of it angled toward the water. Three bedrooms sit comfortably across the layout, two crowned with king beds, one with a queen, each sharing in the same elevated light.

Santa Teresa's rhythm is close but never crowding. The best stretch of beach and the main surf point are a short walk down the hill; a pool and a scatter of restaurants and cafés sit just minutes from the front door. Reaching the house means a brief descent from the upper parking level, easy enough on foot, though many guests rent an ATV or 4x4 to properly explore the peninsula once the rains soften the roads.

This is jungle living in its fullest, most unguarded form. Howler monkeys pass through the trees at the property's edge, geckos keep their quiet watch, and the power grid has its moods, as it does everywhere along this coast. None of it detracts. It is simply Santa Teresa being itself, humidity and all, wild and entirely alive.
