A ridge between two coasts

Some places are built on beautiful land. Others seem to belong to it. This private estate sits on a quartz-based hilltop above Costa Rica's Pacific coast, between the surf and movement of Santa Teresa and the quieter, wilder stretch of Manzanillo.

Ten minutes south, Playa Hermosa draws surfers from around the world for its long, well-formed waves. Five minutes north, Manzanillo Beach remains largely untouched, a sweep of sand where rainforest, local fishermen and open ocean carry on much as they always have, all the way up to the Bongo River.

From the ridge, the Pacific runs past the horizon. On clear days the view reaches more than forty kilometers north toward Nosara, over open water and mountain ranges that fade one behind the other. Below, the waves keep a rhythm so steady it stops registering as sound and becomes something closer to a state of mind. That rhythm sets the pace of the house.

The architecture doesn't compete with the landscape. It seems to rise out of it. Glass walls give way to terraces, and ocean breezes move through every room on their own. Morning light crosses stone and wood. Tropical gardens wrap the home and soften its edges until it's hard to tell where the building ends and the hillside begins. Nothing here feels imposed. Everything feels discovered.

On the first floor, the main suite looks out over the ocean and mountains from a king-size bed framed in soft canopy drapes and fine linens. A second bedroom is anchored by a king bed made from Guanacaste wood and a single, distinctive piece of art, with a private terrace for morning coffee while the landscape wakes up. Nature-inspired wallpaper gives its bathroom character, and a closet and in-room safe make it easy to settle in. In the third bedroom, a king-size wooden bed faces the Pacific and the mountains beyond, and the terrace holds the slower hours of early morning and late afternoon. A century-old sliding door separates the room from the bathroom, where light filters into the shower straight from the jungle.

The library is the most intimate room in the house, lined with books and looking out to the ocean and mountains. An antique blue door sets its tone, and a private outdoor lounge lets a good book follow you outside. With a queen-size pull-out sofa and a television, it becomes an extra bedroom when the house is full.

Just beside the main house, a standalone casita offers more privacy, with its own swimming pool and kitchen. African-inspired design, antique furnishings and canopy drapes give it a warm, personal feel. The bathroom opens to the jungle with both indoor and outdoor showers, there's a closet for unpacking properly, and the private pool makes it easy to spend the whole day on your own schedule.
